What I Realized When I Turned 34

Recently, I celebrated my 34th birthday. I know… it’s crazy. How could someone so hip and fresh be in their 30’s? That’s what you’re thinking right? No? Well, don’t worry. You’re not alone. It’s recently come to my attention, that I might not be as hip as I had hoped. When you’re young, you swear to yourself that you will NEVER be that dorky grown up. You’ll stay in touch with trends and always listen to popular music. And then you reach your 30’s… you look around and realize, whoa… I don’t think I’m cool anymore. What was my first clue, you ask? Well, let me tell you a little about the moments that led me there:

1. That moment when you’re at work and you absent-mindedly sing along to someone’s hip hop ring tone… and the entire staff busts out laughing at you like you’re that dorky old lady who’s trying to be cool… Ouch.

2. Or that moment when you’re in the department store and you pass by the junior section and realize that trends have come full circle and the racks look like your closet in the 8th grade… you know, back when you were trendy.

3. How about that moment when you’re surprised that the young buck next to you knows the words to the song that was popular back when you were in high school, and he goes, “What? I love oldies!” …Ouch

Getting older never ceases to surprise me. Your mind stays young… I still feel the same as I did when I was bouncing through the halls of Mariner High. But for some reason, the younger generation doesn’t see how young I am on the inside! What’s that all about?? How did I become the dorky grown up?!
