If you have ever tried to get me to dress up for Halloween, then you’ve probably learned that I hate Halloween. I’ve “celebrated” 33 Halloweens and last year was the first one that I remember genuinely enjoying. I’m sure I enjoyed Halloween as a child, with my parents… I just don’t really remember it. Once I got older, I just remember being freezing, and not really that excited about candy. I’ve never been much of a sweet tooth. I’d much prefer to snack on french fries and potato chips. So when you combine all those factors, it’s no surprise that Halloween is really just a chore for me.
That was until Dom came along. Last year was easily my FAVORITE Halloween ever. We had him dressed in a Cookie Monster costume that was at least 2 sizes too small, and watching him run down the street, thoroughly enjoying being with so many cousins and friends – was just priceless. THEN there was that moment, where he realized that if you run up to the doorstep and say “Trick or Treat” – THEY GIVE YOU CANDY!!!! It was all over after that, he was giddy and just all smiles. I never laughed so hard in my life.
Right now my child is running around in bouncy circles in our living room, which is a strong indication that this year – he knew about the candy and definitely wanted to be a part of it. He picked out a Ninja costume and looked ADORABLE in it. We had such a great time. To kick off this formerly hated holiday, we visited the Elgin Christmas Tree Farm where they have a huge pumpkin patch and lots of fun fall festivities. We had family along with us and we took some fun holiday type pictures. As you know, those are always the best ones. :o)
On the night before Halloween, I raced home from work so we could have some Pre-Trick-Or-Treating-Fun. With a little picnic table set up outside, we had dinner, decorated little haunted houses made out of gingerbread, and finger painted the pumpkins we got from the pumpkin patch! The kids LOVED it and definitely ate more candy than they decorated with. I didn’t really expect any different, but I gave it the ol’ college try.
Then of course, when Halloween finally rolled around – we got all dolled up and went Trick or Treating. And seriously – I cannot tell you how cute it was to watch this kid run up to house after house with this little bucket and say “Happy Halloween!” So. Stinking. Cute.
Lots and lots of fun was had over here at the Sannar house. I like this change of pace… the one where I actually enjoy and look forward to Halloween. Maybe next year, I’ll even put some effort into a costume. We’ll see – baby steps and all that jazz.
Oh, and lastly – the BEST part of the night, was catching Dom when he didn’t know we were watching and getting it on video tape. Check out this amazing cuteness. Sorry it’s dark – it was night time after all. :o)
