Guest Room Design & Decor Reveal

Guest-Bedroom-Decor

For many people, decorating is just putting pictures up on the walls so it looks like you live there. If that’s you, I get it. That’s what I’ve always done prior to owning my home. Now that I feel settled and like I might actually be here awhile, I find myself drawn to spending hours upon hours of just pinning thoughts and ideas for my place. I have so many pins on my “For The Home” board that I’d need 20 homes in order to use them all. And it’s not like they are all similar… no, my tastes range from clean and classic, to trendy and colorful. And they’re always changing. But that’s the beauty of home decor right? Do it up one way, and then next year decide you want something different? I’ve only been in my house 5 months and I can already see into my future… and that’s exactly what it looks like. (Sorry, Tim…)

As promised yesterday, today’s post is my Guest Bedroom Reveal. If you’re one of my good friends, then you’ve probably already seen it, but won’t it be fun to see it again? Plus, I’m including lots of fun details.  I know it will be fun for me. Sometimes, I find myself standing at the top of the stairs just staring in the doorway… wishing it was my room. (I haven’t done a single thing to my room yet. Not one.)

Just a couple notes before we start with the pictures: 1) I designed this room with my parents in mind. They live a little ways from here and whenever we have holidays or special occasions, we like them to stay with us and get some quality time in with the grandkids. 2) My parents gave me a budget and paid for their room set up, which explains why I designed this guest room without even doing my own first. It also explains how amazing my parents are, but that’s a post all on it’s own.

Alright so if you aren’t interested in home décor, this next part will probably bore you. If you are interested – then get cozy… cuz it’s about to get real. My budget for this room was $2,000.00 and did not include the mattress, pillows, sheets, or T.V. Those were all things they wanted to pick out on their own. Everything else was a surprise and they didn’t see it until it was done and they came to stay for the first time. Fun right? I know…

Let’s dive right in: I had in my head that I wanted to go for a monochromatic look. I lean towards cooler colors, but my parents lean towards warmer… so I wanted to find a balance that made us both happy since it was their room…but in my house. So I found a warm greige (grey/beige) that I love and definitely plan to use again in the future. As I shopped, I found that I really like color, so my “monochromatic” has a twist. :o)

I was surprised to find that the light fixture was my favorite thing in this room. I mean, I think that light fixtures often provide the finishing touch and that’s why I love them… but I was very unsure of this one. I returned the one I had originally purchased, which was just a solid color. And when I couldn’t decide, Tim stepped in and said this was the one we needed. He was right. It’s perfect and my very favorite thing in here.

What do you think? I know grey and yellow is really trendy right now… and that kinda bugged me. In fact, I aimed to stay away from it. It turns out though, that they look really great together. There’s no denying it. So I decided to make sure I threw in some other color to balance it out. I refuse to have a room that is only yellow and grey. Call me crazy. So I set up a vanity table for Mom and it went like this:

I used a red vanity table and threw in some turquoise on the clock and the dresser knobs. Other than that, I pretty much stuck with crisp whites, creams, taupes, burlaps, and then the grey and yellow. I also used black & white pictures of the grandkids, but went with color for our Vegas picture because I just wanted that green money to show through. :o) Also when designing this room, I made a big effort to make sure that my parents felt at home here, which is why I put their initials on the wall and pictures of family around the room. I do intend to use it as a guest room, but I think it still feels homey, don’t you?

The room is actually quite small, but it feels very homey and comfortable. The personal touches help, I think. Like that block that says “You Are My Sunshine” made my mom so happy because she used to sing that to us when we were kids. It’s the little things that make all the difference. :o)

While I was taking pictures for this post, I must have been demonstrating stellar parenting skills, because this happened:

Nobody panic. He’s okay. Just walked over and showed me with a little whimper and then went about his day. I would venture to say that he does this about once every other week or so… He’s a pretty rough and tumble kid. We like him.

Okay, so back to the room. Great news! I stayed below budget, coming in around $1,600! So let’s get down to the details… I like lists, shall we make a list? Okay, below is everything you need to know about what and where I got everything (and prices if I can remember them).

So what did they think of the room? Well for this purpose, I asked her to write me a little review. She’s my mom and loves me, so she obliged:

“Our room exceeded all of my expectations! We stayed several nights and it was so comfortable and we felt so pampered! I wish I had Leah’s flare for decorating, she truly has a gift!” – Mom

She’s so sweet. Well, I think that just about covers everything. If you are curious about a certain piece, or would like to see more specific pictures of something that I didn’t show very well, please let me know. I enjoyed every single second of decorating this room, but none of it compared to the look on my mom’s face when she saw it. I would love to spend every minute of the rest of my life decorating. Wouldn’t that be fun?? I seriously love it. So if you’re wanting to decorate, but are having a hard time getting started – let me know!

Thanks Destiny! I really wanted something beautiful but not overdone… And my parents loved it – so I think we hit the bullseye. :o)

LOVE it and pinned it! We are slowly (so, so slowly) getting our house decorated. Unfortunately it’s expensive to decorate a home and we’ve taken forever to get to it!

Glad the kiddo is okay! Ouch!

Thanks for linking up at Wordy Wednesday. :)

Thanks Carrie!! We’ve been in our house for 6 months and that is the only room in my house that’s decorated… But I like to take my time and make sure I pick what I want. So I’m okay if it takes us a while. :o) Thanks for pinning!

Thank you Christine, I kinda started with those pillows and worked my way out. I loved them too… was kinda disappointed when I used them in my mom’s guest room instead of my bedroom!

Oh I love this room! It’s modern but it’s got that 70′ feel somehow :)
    Love all the yellow touches.
    Your son is precious :-D

    • Leah Sannar August 6, 2015, 1:00 pm

Oh thank you! Yes, we think he’s pretty cute. You like the yellow? I was nervous about it because at the time, everything on the internet was “grey & yellow” so I really wanted to avoid it… Turns out, it’s because they look great together, so I just couldn’t avoid it. :)

how do you like the wall color? just bought that paint but having doubts, its for our laundry room makeover. looks nice in your pics but i cant tell how warm of a color it is. i was looking for a more gray then beige color

    • Leah Sannar August 27, 2016, 2:19 pm

Hi Holly! I think if you’re looking for a grey with a warm tone, but still want more grey than beige… you’ve definitely come to the right place. I loved “Toasty Grey” enough in my guest room, that I painted it in most of the rest of my house as well. I’m not a fan of brown, but when I decorated that guest room, I had my parents in mind who tend to lean more towards warm tones, where as I tend to lean more towards cool. So I wanted something that I liked, but that would still make them feel at home and comfortable. I thought it was perfect. It’s light, bright, airy, very subtle, and it’s definitely grey upon first glance, and it has just enough warm under tone to allow the use of browns and warmer tones in your decorating. I hope that helps! I’d love to see your laundry room when you’re done! Share it with me on my FB page!
